Expensive prints by Kodak

01/2011

Kodak launched a new AIO with its No. 30 line pigmented inks for 100 Euros. Cost-per-page stepped up by 20 percent.
Some months ago Kodak increased cost of print by introducing new ink cartridges. Now, with its new cheap AIO Kodak ESP C310 costs of print rise again. The C310 follows the ESP 3250.

At first glance the new paper feeder stands out. All previous AIOs fed paper from the bottom. The new ESP C310 has its paper tray at its back. Gleaming plastik has been relinquished, and there are minor alterations of the AIOs body.

The AIO comes with USB, Wlan, and a cardreader (SD/MS). It sports a minute display, 1.5 inches in diameter. Kodak gives no information on print speed and printing unit.

Energy consumption has decreased compared to other Kodak AIOs. According to "Energystar" the power demand has been reduced from 6 to 3.3 watts in "sleep mode", compared to other manufacturers in this field not a striking result.

Yields and cost of print

The new No. 30 line cartridges come in two sizes. XL-cartridges have almost double yield compared to standard cartridges, but since their price is twice as expensive, there is no advantage for the consumer.

Comparing costs per page based on 2.500 printed pages the Kodak ESP C310 ends up midfield. Compared to the ESP 3250 the new ink cartridges increase cost of print by 20 percent. Kodak seems to depart its earlier intention, to sell expensive printers with favorable costs of print.
